Epic poem (Old English heroic poetry, translated)
Beowulf (Grendel’s Defeat – Excerpt)
By Anonymous (Anglo-Saxon epic)
In the great hall Heorot, the hero Beowulf faces the man-eating monster Grendel. Renouncing weapons, Beowulf grapples barehanded with the demon. Amid the din of battle that shakes the hall, Beowulf rends Grendel’s arm from its socket. Mortally wounded, Grendel flees to the fens to die, and the Danes rejoice at the deliverance wrought by the Geatish hero.
